Interactive View recently installed the first Elport DZ-Wall multi-screen monitoring display for use in command and control applications at XL Airway’s global control centre in Crawley , Sussex . Measuring 3.6 metres wide by 1.2 metres high, this screen is constructed from 21, high brightness 19” TFT screens with multiple video and data inputs controlled by a networked display selection application program.
The display is used to provide real-time visual indication of the status of all aircraft in XL ’s fleet, together with global information to staff working in the operation centre. Capable of selecting and simultaneously displaying up to 16 separate video and data feeds, the display is easily changed to enable staff to monitor and handle incoming news and airport information and respond to changing events.
Each of the 16 separate video and data sources is individually selected, sized and positioned on screen using the screen’s in-built image manipulation processing, enabling high quality video streams and computer data to be placed on screen to best suit the immediate requirement.
Tim Hemsley explains the way it is used “The screen allows us to adapt to changing events and global aircraft status and ensures that every member of the control team has the same up-to-date information. Its flexibility in selecting, sizing and positioning individual pieces of information means that we can easily adapt and change information shown on the screen to our needs on a minute-by-minute basis”. At any time we may be monitoring aircraft positions, weather forecasts, breaking news and crew information and this screen allows all this information to be provided on a central display available to everyone here”.
Lee Edwards, Managing Director of Interactive View commented “XL Airways asked us to provide a method of presenting many and varied pieces of live video and data content. We realised that individual dedicated displays would not be feasible and that a fully flexible display capable of showing high-resolution graphics and data was required. Elport’s DZ-Wall was the only solution that met the cost and performance for this application. It is our first control room installation and performs well in this demanding situation. We look forward to installing more of these screens throughout the UK”.
